Crouching Leopard Pin

Item# 80038440

Native to China, the leopard has long served as a symbol of bravery and ferocity in Chinese culture. In ancient China, images of leopards were embroidered on the robes of military officials to assert their superior combat skills. This tradition continued well into Ming and early Qing dynasties where third and fourth-tiered military officials wore leopards as badges to designate their rank.

Our pin takes its inspiration from an original gold and turquoise pectoral fashioned in the shape of a crouching leopard. Highly stylised, the pectoral serves as a fine example of 6th-century B.C. metalwork.
