The Art Deco style is named after the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes of 1925. Its popularity extended through the 1930's from Europe to the United States, and was applied by artists and architects to a wide variety of media. The aesthetic focused on simple forms, often geometric or stylised from nature, smooth lines, and bold colours. Art Deco jewellery favoured geometrical compositions with little surface decoration and strong colour contrasts integrating large gemstones.
