The first watches-then more like portable clocks-began to appear in the late Fifteenth or early Sixteenth Century, after the invention of the spring-driven (rather than weight-driven) timekeeping device. In the second half of the Eighteenth Century in Europe, fashions in pocket watches changed dramatically toward a slimmer, less ornamented and more elegant style.
