The skeleton clock is characterised by having its movement plates pierced out to a minimum of essential metal in a symmetrical design which leaves all the wheel-work and escapement clearly visible. The first British skeleton clocks were made ca. 1820 mainly as curiousities and to special order, however, demand soon increased as a new generation sought its novelty.
