The classic design of the Museum's 19th Century English is based on an original gold pocket watch (English, ca. 1815-30) with a secondary basket patterned dial and blue-steel hands.

The first watches-then more like portable clocks-began to appear in the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century, after the invention of the spring-driven (rather than weight-driven) time-keeping device. In the second half of the 18th century in Europe, fashions in pocket watches changed dramatically toward a slimmer, less ornamented and more elegant style.
