Edgar Degas's (French, 1834-1917) sculpture has been termed a "private" medium, akin to the sketch or drawing, in which the artist limited himself to subjects that allowed him to explore certain problems that fascinated him. Most of these problems were connected with representing motion. Degas often made repetitions of the same subject, but with subtle variations in composition or in the dynamics of movement within the figures. The original figure is one of two versions of the Spanish Dancer. The bronze casting in the Museum's collection is from the series cast from Degas's original models in wax and clay by A.A. Hébrard in 1920. Our Spanish Dancer bonded bronze reproduction is cast using a model made from a mold taken from the original numbered bronze casting.
