The original statuette belonged to a Cistercian convent in France, though now it is housed in The Cloisters Museum and Gardens, a branch of The Metropolitan Museum of Art devoted to the art and architecture of the late Middle Ages. In her right hand, the Virgin holds a pyxis, a covered vessel associated with the Eucharist, while the baby Christ clutches a round object, likely an apple, which recalls the temptation of Adam, the fall of man, and Christ's redemption of humankind.
