Our hand-enamelled Horus Pin is based on an ancient Egyptian multicoloured faience falcon figure from Dynasty 30 (380-332 B.C.). Thought to be used as an inlay on a wooden shrine, the falcon is made of ground quartz delicately detailing the bird's feathers, with colours suggesting precious turquoise and lapis lazuli. The falcon was considered to be a sacred creature and was linked to Horus, the falcon-headed king of the gods and protector of the ruling pharaoh.

To the ancient Egyptians, who associated certain animals with specific deities, the falcon was a sacred creature. They linked the soaring bird of prey with Horus, the falcon-headed king of the gods. As the chief god, Horus embodied the concept of kingship and therefore was closely connected to the ruling pharaoh and was his protector. He also had long-standing ties to the sky and the sun. The falcon-god remained a powerful figure from at least the beginning of the Dynastic period (ca. 3100 B.C.) until Greco-Roman times.
