One of the most important jewellers in the American Arts and Crafts movement, French collected colourful fragments of glass as a young girl, and as an adult returned to her childhood collection as material for her jewellery. She was fascinated by the glass from the famous Boston and Sandwich Glass Company, established in 1825 by Deming Jarves. The company was known for its tableware, lamps, bottles, and numerous other pieces of blown, cut, engraved, moulded, and pressed glass. French cut the glass into pieces for jewellery, winning numerous awards for her expressive designs, which evoked the colours of the Cape Cod landscape.
