Alpha (A), the first, and omega (Ω), the last, letter of the Greek alphabet symbolise Christ's transcendence of time. They have been used in Christian iconography since its earliest years, possibly before the toleration of Christianity itself in 313 A.D. by Constantine I. The letters usually appear in conjunction with a representation of Christ or a cross. During the Byzantine and medieval periods, the A and the Ω were frequently incorporated in icons, manuscripts, and liturgical objects in gold, silver, enamel, and ivory. In examples of Mozarabic crosses of the eleventh century, the letters are suspended, one from each arm of the cross.
