Our 18th Century French Cross Pendant, crafted of 24K gold overlay with Swarovski™ crystals, is based on an eighteenth-century silver cross with inset diamonds, probably of French origin. The cross, on display in the Museum's collection, is notable for the delicacy of its design and fineness of execution. In eighteenth-century France, influential Paris jewellery makers created splendid adornments that were prized for their sparkling cut gemstones and fine workmanship. Following the French fashion, the European elite added elegant daytime and evening jewellery to their ensembles: women wore exquisite hair ornaments, brooches, rings, and pendants, while men sported jewelled snuff boxes, watch chains, buttons, and buckles.
