The Langobards, a Germanic people who migrated south from the Danube Valley, invaded Byzantine Italy in 568. Earrings of the "basket" variety, named for the round "basket" of gold wire or sheet gold on the hoop, were fashionable in Italy for at least a century before the arrival of the Langobards and quickly became part of Langobardic women's dress. An example of one such earring, which was originally found in Italy, is now in the Museum's collection.
