The Classical period in ancient Greece (ca. 475-325 B.C.) was an era of great achievement in democratic statesmanship, architecture, and the arts. During the Mid-Fourth Century B.C., Macedonia, in Northern Greece, became a formidable power under Philip II (r. 360/59-336 B.C.). Philip's triumphs ably served the conquests of his celebrated son, Alexander the Great (r. 336-323 B.C.), whose reign was to forever change the face of Europe and Asia.
