Peter Carl Fabergé (Russian, 1846-1920) revolutionised the way jewellery was evaluated in Russian society by emphasising creativity and workmanship over the use of precious stones and metals. His studio produced a wide variety of objets d'art, including an exceptional variety of carved stone animals. The primary concern of Fabergé's sculptors was achieving the most realistic representation of these animals into stone form. They were able to give the animals a sense of freshness, but also an enduring charm. The Royal Collection includes more than three hundred animals by Fabergé, the largest collection of his animals anywhere in the world.
