Featuring a winsome dove "delivering" a stamped letter in the Museum's Jefferson R. Burdick Collection, our hand-enamelled pin decorated with Swarovski™ crystals is based on a delightful mid twentieth century greeting card. At the age of ten, Jefferson R. Burdick (American, 1900-1963) began collecting American ephemera and, throughout his life, amassed the finest collection of advertising cards, baseball cards, greeting cards, paper dolls, and other paper collectibles in the United States. Burdick donated more than three hundred thousand items to The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1947 and spent the next 16 years cataloguing his unique collection on our premises. Sterling silver, hand enamelled with Swarovski™ crystals. 3''W from tail to envelope; 1 1/2''H.

The Jefferson R. Burdick Collection at The Metropolitan Museum of Art represents the life work of a man devoted almost entirely to collecting and cataloguing trade cards and other types of paper collectibles. Amassed by Jefferson R. Burdick (American, 1900-1963), his is the finest collection of American trade cards in the United States. Ephemera in the Burdick Collection ranges from advertisements for meat products, milk, bread, women's clothing, shoes, stoves, pianos, cigars, candy to postcards, playing cards, greeting and souvenir cards, and paper dolls. So absorbed was Burdick by his passion for collecting that he devised a system for categorising trade cards that was published as the American Card Catalogue in 1939. Subsequent editions appeared every few years until 1960; his system remains in use today.
