The Mughal empire (1526-1858) in India flourished under a long line of dynamic and highly cultured rulers, who supported some of the greatest achievements of Indian art and architecture. In the Museum's collection are many fine Mughal carpets, including the exceptional mid-seventeenth-century silk and pashmina wool from which our umbrella was developed. The field is patterned with large blossoms centered within a trellis of lozenge-shaped compartments, and with border and guard bands containing delicate scrolling floral vines.
