Rudolf Burckhardt (American, born Switzerland, 1914-1999) arrived in New York from his native Switzerland in 1935, and the city became a predominant subject of his work. His photograph Times Square, taken about 1938 and printed later, is an evocative scene of New York at twilight. Wraithlike figures, silhouetted against the glowing marquees and advertisements of Times Square, cut across Broadway, whose blacktop glistens from a recent rainfall.
