Geometric patterns, calligraphy, and vegetal patterns are combined, duplicated, interlaced, and arranged in intricate combinations in Islamic art. A dazzling ceramic panel composed of star- and cross-shaped tiles, originally from Kashan, Iran, is in the Museum's collection. This 13th-century masterwork features eight-pointed stars decorated with abstract vegetal designs, animals, and birds painted in blue and copper luster on opaque white.
