I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold (1928) is one of eight abstract portraits of friends that artist Charles Demuth (American, 1883-1935) completed between 1924 and 1929 and exhibited at Alfred Stieglitz's New York galleries. This painting, in the Museum's collection, pays homage to "The Great Figure," a poem by the American poet and physician William Carlos Williams (American, 1883-1963). The poem describes the experience of seeing a red fire engine with the number 5 painted on it racing through the city streets. Demuth personalised the portrait with the poet's initials and nicknames "Bill" and "Carlo."
